Balzac's Espresso Cinnamon Buns

Buns with caffeine? Now that’s a great way to start your day.  

Ingredients: 

Buns

  • and 3/4 cupsall-purpose flour (plus more as needed for rolling) 
  • 1/4 cupgranulated sugar 
  • 2 teaspoonbaking powder 
  • 1/4 teaspoonbaking soda 
  • 1/2 teaspoonsalt 
  • 1largeegg
  • 3/4 cupbuttermilk, cold 
  • 5 tablespoon melted unsalted butter

Filling

  • 3 tablespoon softened butter
  • 1.5 tablespoon cinnamon 
  • 1/3 cups brown sugar 
  • 1.5 teaspoon finely ground Balzac’s Farmers Blend 

Icing

Instructions: 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in a bowl. 
  3. Add in the egg, milk and butter, using a spatula to mix. 
  4. Add more milk or flour depending on the dough – it should be moist but workable with hands. Be careful not to over knead!  
  5. Roll dough into a ball and roll out to create a flat rectangle like shape – about half an inch thick. 
  6. Spread the butter and filling over the dough. 
  7. Mix the rest of the filling ingredients and sprinkle over the entire surface of the dough. 
  8. Roll the dough into a log. Cut log into pieces, however thick you want the buns to be. 
  9. Grease a baking dish and add rolls. 
  10. While baking, mix together icing ingredients. Add more or less espresso depending how runny or thick you want the topping. For an extra thick icing, add cream cheese. 
  11. Bake until rolls are slightly brown on top but still feel moist when checked with a fork. 
  12. Top with icing while warm and enjoy!
